My Turn – how I remember Christmas

It’s the season to be jolly.

My earliest memories of Christmas were never on the day, but the build-up to the day.

All my cousins and I would visit my grandmother as soon as we received our term four report cards.
I did not mind sleeping on the floor with my five cousins, or not having electricity.

December 24th was the day we all looked forward to, the smell of brand new clothing, and fitting the clothes was, of course, the highlight.
On Christmas Day we all went to church.

I for one was never interested in the church service, all I wanted to do was get home and wear my new clothes.

What is Christmas without a seven colour meal? Everyone outdid themselves in the kitchen.

As soon as we were finished eating, my cousins and I would show off our new clothes to our friends.

These days Christmas is an intimate celebration between my mother and me.
