VIDEO: Faan Likkewaan relocates

A massive Water Monitor, most probably Faan Likkewaan, was relocated to a place of safety after he was caught by youngsters on Thursday.

The massive Water Monitor was rescued by emergency workers of the Steve Tshwete Fire Department after their help were called in by a group of boys who caught the reptile.

Welcome Selogiloe, from the Fire Department, said the monitor was found in an area known by locals as Burundi, between Gholfsig and Mhluzi.

The Water Monitor, also known as a Nile Monitor, was transported to the Fire Department in a crate on the back of an emergency vehicle. The furious reptile swung his tail and made angry hissing noises at anyone who came too close.

The SPCA was contacted to help with the relocation of the majestic monitor.

After some planning on how to subdue the angry reptile without causing it further harm, it was decided to cover it with a blanket in an attempt to secure the crate cover without injuring the animal or its rescuers.

Fire Department and SPCA officials worked together to get the animal back into the crate.

SPCA officials Petro Oberholzer and Sonika Oosthuizen took the clearly stressed animal to a place of safety, in the Kranspoort area.

The animal lay dead still whilst they removed a rope tied to its body with a snake pole. As soon as he realized he was free, he sped off to a nearby pool of water and disappeared.

The water monitor is an estimated 1,5 metres long. It is very possible that it is the same water monitor that was spotted by several residents in Gholfsig and Clubville.
