Mother and child dies, grandmother in coma
Whilst a mother and child lost their lives, a grandmother is fighting for hers in the Millpark hospital after an accident on the N4 on Monday afternoon two weeks ago.
Nomzamo Sharon Nkosi (24) and Ngcebenhle Olwethu Vusumuzi Shabalala (five months) were killed on impact whilst Esta Sibongile Nkosi was transported to hospital in a serious condition.
The accident occurred when a trailer dislodged from a taxi and swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting the Volkswagen Polo driven by Nkosi, head on.
A third vehicle was damaged beyond repair when the wheel and axle of the trailer landed on its bonnet. The occupants, Christina and Derek Landman, escaped unscathed.
Eyewitnesses to the accident said that the trailer dislodged from the taxi towing it, in one smooth motion. No bump or jerk, just a trailer that suddenly swerved to the right into the path of oncoming traffic.
Capt. Khanyisile Zwane, Middelburg police spokesperson, said that the matter is being investigated and the docket will be sent to court for decision once all relevant statements have been taken down.
Both mother and son were laid to rest in eMalahleni over the weekend.
