Update: Fire victims identified
The victims of the veld fire were positively identified by their family members.
The deceased are Arnaldo Ferncisco (26), Petro Fernando (30), Jito Jose Muhate (24) and Dumisane Sitsha (29).
The four men died while trying to escape the blaze at a Nooitgedacht farm near Elandslaagte last week Tuesday. Earlier Dumisane Sitsha was rushed to hospital when he was found injured but he later died in ICU.
All the victims are from Mozambique and their bodies where repatriated on Tuesday for burial.
“I can’t explain the agony of this tragedy, I just can’t. All these men leave children and wives behind in Mozambique,” said Mr Capriano Vilanculo, cousin of Arnold and Petro.
According to Mr Richards Razenberg the fire was started by lightning at a neighbouring farm a week before.
“It felt like I was looking the devil in the eyes during that fierce fire. This day is well engraved in our lives. We also lost a total of six animals including a pregnant Kudu.”
On Tuesday afternoon Mr Razenberg confirmed that the fire had finally been extinguished.
