Bottle stabber sentenced

A man who stabbed his friend to death with a broken beer bottle, in June 2013 was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

Elias Mathulele Sekgobela (47) was partying with a group of friends whom he was staying with on the same premises, in Hlalamnandi.

The victim, Lesiba Segatlane Jan Kekama (45), and Sekgobela’s girlfriend, Lilian Letsotso (42), left the flat where the party took place and went to the main house to search for a CD. Suspecting they are having a sexual affair, Sekgobela followed them.

Back at the party, Sekgobela struck Kekama on his head with an empty beer bottle until it broke. Sekgobela then started stabbing Kekama with the broken bottle.

The crowd hopelessly intervened in an attempt to save Kekama from his attacker.

When Letsotso couldn’t find the CD she returned to the flat, which now became part of a murder scene. When Sekgobela, saw her he yelled: “You bitch! I’m coming for you!”, holding the broken bottle full of blood in his hand. Letsotso ran away and hid inside a closet in the main house. The crowd again intervened and finally succeeded in separating Sekgobela from Kekama.

Kekama, who was wounded and vigorously bleeding, tried to get away as far as he could. Sekgobela ran back to the flat, grabbed a knife to make sure Kekama did not get away alive.

When the crowd wanted to stop him, he threatened to stab them too. Kekama tried to walk away from the premises but collapsed and bled to death. He didn’t even reach the main gate. Sekgobela threw the knife next to Kekama’s body, went back to the flat, took another knife and threatened to stab Letsotso. Police were deployed to the scene who found Sekgobela on a bed in one of the other flats, holding the knife on his chest.
