A joint operation between the Middelburg Police and the Steve Tshwete Traffic department saw 19 people arrested for drinking and driving.

Captain Khanyisile Zwane said that many accidents and road rage incidents are liquor related.

The people arrested had to pay R1 500 bail to get out of prison and had to appear in the Middelburg Magistrates Court.

Their names were not made public at the time of going to press.

  1. I think that R1500 is to little bail for people drinking and driving or drunk driving, because too many innocent lives are lost due to people not knowing when stop or once they drunk to go driving around instead of just staying where they at or letting a sober person take them home. 95% of the time its the passengers or other road users seriously injured or killed and the driver is fine because they too relaxed.

  2. I think the bail of R1 500,00 paid by suspected drunk drivers is too little. I also think increasing the bail money might not change the driver behavior.I would suggest that the control system should be improved and new strategies adopted. There should be multidisciplinary team meeting(traffic officer, health, police, judges and prosecutions who can debate and discuss the current control systems and come up with joint strategies. Repeat offenders and problem drinkers should be monitored so that they can finish their suspensions if any. I think from 3 July 2014 to date the number has increased.Update the number again for end July 2014 and August 2014, you will realize that the number has increased
