(Gallery) Elections – Free, fair and peaceful so far

The 2016 Local Government Elections started off smoothly in Middelburg, where most of the 67 voting districts in 29 wards were calm yet abuzz with election enthusiasm.

www.mobserver.co.za visited Doornkop where voters turned out at a slow pace, with the majority simply walking in and out of their stations.

In Mhluzi, especially near the Mhluzi Mall, queues were much longer, winding like snakes.

Despite the Mhluzi hive of activity, police reported no incidents by midday.

At Corpus Christi Church in Aerorand, police say an unregistered voter “caused a scene” when he was refused entry to the voting station.

In Extension 18, where a diverse electorate showed up in droves to cast their votes, no incidents were reported by midday.

Voting also went smoothly in Nasaret and Extension 24, where voting stations were eerily quiet, with promise of an afternoon turnout.

Though voting was somewhat slow at Kanonkop Laer, the queue progressed much faster at its namesake, Kanonkop Hoër.

Voters also walked in and out of voting stations in Dennesig, where the morning turnout was also quite lackadaisical.

IEC personnel invited www.mobserver.co.za into voting stations with open arms, and voters said that the staff were professional.

Disabled and elderly voters were moved to the front of the queues without hassle.

Everywhere the weather played along, and in general, August 3, will go down as one of the most peaceful election days to date, judging by the camaraderie shown by political parties stationed outside voting stations everywhere.
