Mall seeing green
A number of green initiatives are taking root at Middelburg Mall as it ramps up efforts to save energy and water to become even more environmentally friendly.
All external lighting at the centre has now been converted to LED lighting, which is more durable and uses significantly less energy than conventional lighting. Smart motion-sensing lights have also been installed in the mall’s restrooms.
By automatically turning off after a few minutes, motion lights prevent wasted electricity and help conserve precious energy resources.
“Energy efficient lighting is just one of the many ways we’re helping create a more sustainable environment in our community,” explains Middelburg Mall General Manager, Mike Tammadge.
Middelburg Mall’s water wise initiatives include conserving drinking water by making use of two boreholes on-site that supply separate water tanks which are then used for irrigation of the gardens and external cleaning of the building.
In addition to water and energy saving measures, the centre has broadened its focus to include recycling. All waste products are carefully sorted and those that are recyclable are sent for recycling. Shoppers can also do their bit to help keep our planet greener by making use of Middelburg Mall’s on-site electronic waste recycling bin.
