Prepaid electricity paypoints go offline

Prepaid electricity paypoints throughout the Steve Tshwete municipality went offline on Wednesday afternoon and was still not restored by late Thursday morning.

Hundreds of people took to social media, especially Facebook, to vent their anger and frustration at what the municipality called an “unplanned outage”.

Cllr Rehana Pilodia of the Steve Tshwete Municipality said in a statement: “I would like to apologize again on behalf if the municipality. This was not planned otherwise people would have been given notice in advance”.

She added that municipal workers busy with the servers were working around the clock.

“They are trying their best to get the paypoints at the garages to be operational in the meanwhile. As soon as the first point is operational I will be informed to relay the information. All systems and phones are also off at the municipality. Thank you for understanding the crisis.”
