Update: Warrant for Sibiya
A warrant of arrest has been issued for the head of Emergency Services at the Hendrina Power Station.
This after Nkosinathi Freedom Sibiya failed to appear in court on Friday, 13 November, where his trial was supposed to resume.
Sibiya, who faces charges of culpable homicide, reckless driving and the failure to ascertain the nature or extent of injuries on an accident scene, had his trial interrupted when the state prosecutor broke a tooth and the matter was forced to stand down.
With the next set court date, the courtroom in which Sibiya’s trial was heard, did not sit because of a shortage of magistrates.
Sibiya is accused of being responsible for the death of Gerald Viljoen in February 2014 when his Mercedes collided with the motorbike Mr Viljoen was travelling on.
He ran away from the scene and only reported the incident hours later, claiming that he only came to his senses when he woke up in a field near Extension 24.
Mr Viljoen’s widow, Jaqui and their son Ricardo, were visibly upset because of the delay in proceedings.
“I cannot continue with my life before this court case is over and done with. The accident did not only kill my husband, it destroyed my and my son’s life,” an emotional Mrs Viljoen said when she found out that the accused did not appear before court.
The Middelburg police confirmed that a warrant has been issued.
