Somalians arrested with khat
What was to be a routine stop and search turned into a massive drug bust when two Somalian nationals were arrested by the Middelburg Flying Squad on Tuesday morning.
The men were found in possession of the prohibited substance khat. Catha endulis (commonly known as khat) is a plant containing the psychoactive component cathione.
Chewing the plant is an age old tradition originating from East Africa. The effects of the plant can be compared to the drug speed (amphetamine).
The plant can be found growing in the Roossenekal and Steelpoort areas, making the R555 (Stoffberg road) and the N4 major smuggling routes.
Shalan Yusuf (28) and Amalon Yusuf (33) have been charged with drug possession. They are both kept in custody.
