Through the Editor’s eyes…
You've never seen Middelburg if you haven't seen it through the lens of a journalist.

For the past 40-years, Middelburg Observer Editor, Mr Tobie van den Bergh, has been at the helm of one of South Africa’s most enduring publications – the Middelburg Observer.
He’s navigated through tumultuous political seas and were branded a traitor, complete with noose accompanying the threat.
Hundreds of bloody accident, murder, family murder, suicide and other violent crimes were witnessed by a man who juggled his family life, raising three kids, and nurtured a marriage of 35 years.
But, sport is what really got his creative juices flowing, and the stories emanating from the change rooms after rugby matches, off the pitch at soccer games, next to the rink at boxing matches, or the grueling stretch from Pietermatizburg to Durban – a feat he has accomplished eight times – has made him a household name in sports journalism across South Africa.
Get a peek into his illustrious career first hand between 26 October and 1 November, with his photo exhibition at the Middelburg Mall (Spar entrance).
A picture speaks a thousand words, and the exhibition which aims to bring the past 40-years into artistic view, promises to be a spectacle of note.
The exhibition will follow Mr Van den Bergh’s print media career, from editorial fledgling to Editor, which started on 3 December 1975.
A Spar voucher, to the value of R1000 is up for grabs, and all that needs to be done is for Spar clients to throw their Spar till slips, with names and contact details, into the special box at the exhibition.
The winner will be announced at the end of the exhibition, which will formally be open from Monday night, daily, during shopping hours.
The exhibition is open to all, so be sure to bring the family to get a glimpse into Middelburg, its people, and new generations over the past four decades.
Be sure not to miss it.
