It’s a boy! – Born to mine…

Not in their wildest dreams, did they think that they would be part of God's master plan on Tuesday morning as they prepared for work.

The morning started off as a normal day at the Shanduka Coal Clinic.

“One of our female patients completed her annual medical and was awaiting transport to eMalahleni. At about 13:00 Portia, our Clinic Admin Clerk, was notified that a lady in the guard house was in severe pain.

Upon investigation she realised that the lady was pregnant and accompanied her back to the clinic.

The patient was made comfortable in Sr Sunell Smith’s office while we contacted the local ambulance services, who informed us that they could not assist immediately.

Whilst waiting for the ambulance, nature decided to take its course. The patient went into labour,” said Sr Karin Jacobs.

With the assistance of Shanduka Coal’s well qualified Occupational Health Sisters, Sunell Smith and Karin Jacobs, a healthy baby boy was delivered at 13:35 weighing 3.2 kg.

Personnel and patients in the waiting room were amazed when the little boy gave his first cry.

Everybody was overjoyed when they saw the little miracle.

As a well-oiled team, all Clinic personnel assisted with the necessary arrangements.

The ambulance arrived at around 15:00 where both mother and baby were transported to the hospital and were later released.

Shanduka Coal was informed that the patient named her baby boy “Shandukani”.

“It was an honour being part of the special event,” said Sr Karin Jacobs. “Being a qualified Occupational Health Nurse, who would think we would need to use our obstetric knowledge of 18 years back in an Occupational Health Clinic?”
