3 888 animals in kennels
Although they are faced with acts of cruelty against animals on a daily basis, the SPCA "had more ups than downs" this year.
At the SPCA Annual General Meeting, Senior Inspector Petro Oberholzer stated in her Managers Report that the past financial year “had been good.”
She laid emphasis on the fact that they wouldn’t have survived if they did not have the support of the community by ways of donations.
“Everybody who donated, are heroes. Without regular donations, we will not be able to function, and assist all the animals in our care.”
She said that their statistics for this year are more or less the same as last year.
• Animals claimed this year were more than double compared to last year.
• They admitted 3 888 animals into the kennels, either strays or surrendered.
• Requests for euthanasia were double this year.
• They collected almost 800 animals, either unwanted or stray, from areas in and around Middelburg, and as far as Belfast.
• Their outreach program was very successful this year. They sterilized and or neutered 427 animals and 63 were treated and also sterilized.
• The SPCA homed less animals this year. More than 150 home inspections were done of which 41 were declined, due to inadequate fencing, or the animal just simply would not get a good home, or people just decided they don’t want the animal anymore.
• More than 250 post home inspections were done, which enabled them to keep in touch with the animals they previously homed.
• They have a feral cat program in place and quite a number of feral cats were sterilized and put back in their colonies.
Kennel maintenance was done throughout the year. The outside kennels were made warmer for the Winter months and the B block kennels’ front and gates were redone with bigger gridding.
• The SPCA is further very proud of their charity shop, which is open on a Friday. Insp Oberholzer thanked Nan Lucini for her hard work at the shop.
• Insp Oberholzer gave an overview of the work her staff does and also thanked the vets and their staff in town for their ongoing support and assistance.
