Man charged with perjury

A Middelburg resident was charged with perjury after he allegedly attempted to mislead police officers.

Bongani Foster Jiyane (25) opened a theft of a motor vehicle case at the Middelburg police after his vehicle was involved in an accident on 16 May.

In his statement he said that he gave two women a lift on the day and later awoke at the train station in Meyer Street, dazed and confused.

His car was towed from the scene with an employee of the tow-truck service stating that he saw Jiyane run away from the scene shortly after the accident.

Jiyane buckled after being questioned by the investigating officer, admitting that he lied about the events in order to claim from his insurance company.

He has appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court and was released on R500 bail.
