Video: DA makes history
The DA Mpumalanga made history by winning an ANC ward and stronghold in Mhluzi.
The party secured an uncontested win in Ward 28 in the Steve Tshwete Municipality, following the failure of the ANC and other political parties to submit a valid candidate nomination before deadline on the 2nd of February.
DA’s Palesa Mobango, a proportional Councillor in the Steve Tshwete Municipality, was the only validly nominated candidate for the ward.
By-elections were scheduled to take place on the 25th of February following the death of Ward 28 Councillor Joyce Nkambule.
Ward 28 is an ANC stronghold consisting of Extension five, six, and parts of seven, Federal and Tokologo.
The ANC failed to submit the legally required R1000.00 bank guaranteed cheque.
“The failure by the ANC to nominate a candidate is symbolic of the shambles and turmoil within the organisation,” said Anthony Benadie, Provincial Leader of the DA.
“This does not mean the DA will be able to deliver water and houses but we will uplift the people of Ward 28 and this ward will be a beacon of hope in Mhluzi. In congratulating Councillor Mobango on her election, the DA assures the residents of only the best representation. We will work with the community and help residents find a political home,” said Mr Benadie.
The Observer failed after numerous attempts to get a comment from the ruling party, however rumours have been going around that the ANC will take further steps.
