Update: Hlalamnandi protests
Hlalamnandi residents took to the streets in protest following a sudden removal of soccer poles at a temporary soccer field.
The protesters burnt down tyres and threw objects they took from a nearby dumping station on the streets to deliberately block the N11 road.
The protesters were demanding a soccer and netball field in Hlalamnandi for the youth. Although the protest was not violent, the Police reservists and Public Order Police (POP) were called to the scene to maintain the peace.
The mob surrendered when Cllr Rehana Pilodia arrived on the scene and spoke to the march leaders. She suggested that a meeting be held on Monday between the march leaders, Municipal Manager and relevant stakeholders.
According to Mr Thabo Mnisi owner of the soccer club the ‘Mighty Birds’ and local tavern (Lover’s Corner), the absence of such facilities is a great disadvantage for any community.
“Young people easily fall prey to troublesome acts when they have nothing good to keep busy with, such as nyaope or crime,” said Mr Mnisi.
Mr Mnisi sponsors the local soccer team out of his own pocket in hope to keep the boys off the streets. The team has not been able to practice for almost a year as they are being moved to temporary soccer fields almost every three months. Due to new houses being built in the area.
“All we asking is for a recreational area, such as a soccer and netball field,” added Mr Mnisi.
According Mr Mnisi during the meeting the following was agreed on:
•A temporary soccer field was put up until the informal settlements will be removed to up the permanent field as per the plan of the area.
• The municipality also promised to clean the area, including the dumping station at the entrance.
Other issues which were raised by the protesters such as a school, a hall and a clinic will be part of the municipalities future plans for Hlalamnandi.
“We are very happy with the outcomes of the meeting, the municipality started working on the two promises,” said Cllr Rehana Pilodia.
• According to DA Councillor, Deborah Longman, the protesters have threatened to continue with the strike again this week if their demands are not met.
