Nyaope boy threaten to kill snake
A Nyaope boy (drug addict) ran away after he threatened to kill a snake at a pet shop.
Havoc erupted on Tuesday in the CBD when Mr Gustav Uys (owner of Garfields Pet Shop) took out a harmless snake when a young Nyaope boy threatened to kill it.
Mr Uys closed down the Coin Shop about three months ago and opened the Garfields Pet Shop in Bhimy Damane Street. When some of the shop owners (and people who walk by every day) heard of the snakes, they had mixed emotions.
Almost every day there are people coming in, going straight to the snake cages and making a fuss about it. Some of them even come back later to show their friends the “Nyokas”.
On Tuesday Mr Uys saw a few Nyaope boys at the door of the shop. Two came in. One of them stayed in front of the shop, but the other one went straight to one of the snake cages. The young man hit against the glass and screamed: “I will kill your Nyoka!”
Mr Uys, who is fed-up with all the threats he gets about the snakes, walked to the cage, took the Corn snake out, showed it to the boy and said, “kill it if you want to!” All the boys ran away.
About five minutes later the police arrived at the shop. Mr Uys said that one of the policemen wanted to arrest him. “He told me that I threatened people with a dangerous animal, but all my snakes are harmless.”
• Mr Uys mentioned that the SPCA visits his shop on a regular basis and everything is in order. “I will never keep dangerous snakes or animals in my shop!”
