He stated this week that Phase 2 is in the final tender documents finalisation and planned for construction later this year.<\/p>\n
“The delay on this project remains the issue of the Water Use Licence Application (WULA) permit which is still outstanding,” said Kgomo.<\/p>\n
He added that for the Kranspoort Pass “the plan is to add an additional lane and also construct an Arrestor bed at the toe or bottom of the pass.”<\/p>\n
Responding to reports that the Kranspoort pass will be closed for up to nine months during the construction process, Kgomo stated: The reports are unfounded. There will be portions where there will be a two way traffic accommodation and few portions where there will be a Stop\/Go traffic accommodation”.<\/p>\n
He said that SANRAL is busy with the complete rehabilitation of the road, and the next phase is expected to focus on the addition of a fourth lane and safety improvements to the Kranspoort Pass, resulting in a major cut widening.<\/p>\n
“The plan also includes provision of climbing lanes\/overtaking lanes where required, the vertical and horizontal realignment of the road at several points along the route; and widening of the existing road reserve.”<\/p>\n
