The finals of this year’s Spelling Bee competition will be held on September 30, at Hirsch’s Meadowdale, where school pupils from Joburg East, Kempton Park and Germiston will battle it out for top honours.

Now in its second year, the Spelling Bee competition is one of the events held under the auspices of Caxton to promote literacy.

It is aimed at giving future leaders an opportunity to develop their public speaking skills, improve their speech and promote the unerring usage of the English language, pronunciation and spelling.

Last year, the inaugural edition of this event hosted by the Joburg East Express, was well received. The event was also the winner of this year’s Caxton Excellence Awards Best Original Idea.

Kensington Ridge Primary School pupil, Kondwani Kapisa, was the winner of last year’s competition.

“The event is powered by Caxton newspapers and is sponsored by Hirsch’s and Waltons. It will test pupils’ abilities to spell. This Spelling Bee competition is developed to afford our future leaders an opportunity to grow their skills of public speaking, while improving speech and promoting the unerring usage of the English language, pronunciation and spelling,” said Caxton branch manager, Mr Chris Mcinga.

“As the custodians of the future of this country, it is in our interest to tackle all the channels that seek improvement within the education of this country to mould our pupils for a better tomorrow,” he said.

The finals, which will be held at the end of September, follows monthly knock-out rounds hosted by participating schools to determine each school’s Spelling Bee Masters who will represent their schools at the finals.
