{"id":97447,"date":"2015-08-22T07:10:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-22T05:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/97447\/statue-of-womens-rights-champion-bertha-gxowa-unveiled\/"},"modified":"2015-08-24T13:04:02","modified_gmt":"2015-08-24T11:04:02","slug":"statue-of-womens-rights-champion-bertha-gxowa-unveiled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2015\/08\/22\/statue-of-womens-rights-champion-bertha-gxowa-unveiled\/","title":{"rendered":"Statue of women\u2019s rights champion Bertha Gxowa unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The metro\u2019s executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, together with the Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura, unveiled a life-size statue of Bertha Gxowa, in honour of her selfless contribution to the transformation of the country, particularly women, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Scores of women from all over the country converged on the Ke-Ditselana Cultural Village, in Katlehong, to honour the struggle stalwart\u2019s life.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Gxowa died at the age of 76 years, in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>A bronze statue of Mama Bertha, as she was affectionately known, raising a triumphant right hand in a clenched fist salute, which symbolises her solidarity with the courageous women of 1956, now stands at the cultural village, as a constant reminder to the women of today to carry the baton of fighting for complete liberation of women and children.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe only way in which the future can make sense is when its foundation, which is history, is properly organised and documented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnveiling this statue is a symbol of recording our authentic history,\u201d said Gungubele during the unveiling ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>As the nation observes the month of August as Women\u2019s Month, Gxowa is remembered as a philanthropic figure who championed women\u2019s agendas politically and socially.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, she was one of the key figures in the organisation of the historic march to the Union Buildings, which ultimately led to the emancipation of women from the bondage of the apartheid regime.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97449\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97449\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2015\/08\/34GCNMUNICIPALBERTM_33098.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-97449\" src=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2015\/08\/34GCNMUNICIPALBERTM_33098-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"Gauteng Premier David Makhura (left) unveils the statue of Bertha Gxowa, along with Ekurhuleni\u2019s executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, at the Ke-Ditselana Cultural Village, in Katlehong, on Wednesday.\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2015\/08\/34GCNMUNICIPALBERTM_33098-520x390.jpg 520w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2015\/08\/34GCNMUNICIPALBERTM_33098-270x203.jpg 270w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2015\/08\/34GCNMUNICIPALBERTM_33098.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gauteng Premier David Makhura (left) unveils the statue of Bertha Gxowa, along with Ekurhuleni\u2019s executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, at the Ke-Ditselana Cultural Village, in Katlehong, on Wednesday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShe was part of all the major historical campaigns in our history, from the Defiance Campaign of Unjust Laws in 1952, the formation of the Federation of South African Women in 1954 and the adoption of the Freedom Charter in 1955, to the staging of the historic Women&#8217;s March to the Union Buildings in 1956 and the 1957 Treason Trial,\u201d said President Jacob Zuma at her funeral in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Molebatsi Bopape said: \u201cIt is our responsibility as women to play our role in the community, not just in the kitchen, but by being at the centre of the economy;
