Don\u2019t know what to do on Mandela Day?<\/p>\n
Put on your running shoes, sweat bands and gym clothes and head down to Germiston Lake for a walkathon this Saturday (July 18).<\/p>
The event will be hosted by Katlehong\u2019s Isiqalo Nesiphetho.<\/p>\n
\u201cIsiqalo Nesiphetho is a non-profit organisation that was established in 2009 with the primary purpose of creating a development platform for children, youth and adults,\u201d said the organisation\u2019s project manager, Lerato Zwane.<\/p>
\u201cWe operate in Moleleki section, an area that is also hounded by poverty, unemployment, crime, drug abuse and HIV\/Aids, among other things, hence the need to develop and nurture our community from an early age.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe aim to assist in providing better education, social life-skills, an entrepreneurial frame of mind, arts, culture and sports activities and a home for orphaned children.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zwane added that the purpose of the walkathon is to raise funds for the organisation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe funds raised at the event will contribute towards obtaining better operating premises, as our current premises are not ideal, because our children have to sit on the floor while they eat,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough the walk we would also like to promote healthy living.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe invite the community of Germiston to join us on this day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The gates will open at 7am, with the 5.2km walkathon commencing at 8am.<\/p>\n
Tickets will be sold at the gate and a mini theme park and entertainment will be available for children to enjoy throughout the day.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the walk, which we expect to end at 1pm, entertainment will be provided until 5pm,\u201d explained Zwane.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also advise the community to be aware that the Germiston Lake will be closed to the public for the purpose of the event.\u201d<\/p>\n
