{"id":92171,"date":"2015-06-18T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-18T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/92171\/chicken-fried-rat-its-a-hoax\/"},"modified":"2015-06-19T12:31:18","modified_gmt":"2015-06-19T10:31:18","slug":"chicken-fried-rat-its-a-hoax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2015\/06\/18\/chicken-fried-rat-its-a-hoax\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicken fried rat: it&#8217;s a hoax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The viral \u201cdeep fried rat\u201d story emerging out of California this week has residents in a whirl after images were widely distributed on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Devorise Dixon, a 25-year-old Californian man took to Facebook after allegedly biting into an oddly shaped piece of chicken and discovering it was a breaded rat.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>In his Facebook post, Dixon claims to have returned to the KFC where he was served the rat.<\/p>\n<p>The manager of the outlet reportedly apologised for the incident.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Photographs of the alleged fried rodent, along with the story, have been circulating on social media and have made their way to South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>KFC SA has had to field criticism from local patrons who have seen the images and believe it to be a local story.<\/p>\n<p>The KFC South Africa team stated on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=395464970647389&amp;set=p.395464970647389&amp;type=1&amp;permPage=1\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook page<\/a>, \u201cThe photo is from the USA and is unrelated to KFC South Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cchicken-fried rat\u201d story seems to be one of the oldest urban legends.<\/p>\n<p>Popular myth debunking website,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/horrors\/food\/friedrat.asp\" target=\"_blank\"> Snopes.com<\/a> quotes folklorist Gary Alan Fine, who writes, &#8220;The frequency of attachment of an urban legend to the largest company or corporation is so common as to be considered a law of urban folklore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dixon&#8217;s manifestation of the legend has been declared a hoax by official KFC representation.<\/p>\n<p>KFC Corporate claimed, \u201cA customer has made a serious claim against KFC and refuses to cooperate in the investigation. The images the customer originally posted do not include this second angle because it clearly shows it&#8217;s a piece of hand-breaded white meat chicken.
