With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17.<\/p>\n<p>Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17 is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To celebrate like the Irish, here are some St Patrick\u2019s Day recipes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For Irish champ, you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eight medium potatoes.<\/li>\n<li>Half a cup of milk.<\/li>\n<li>Five tablespoons of butter.<\/li>\n<li>One bunch of spring onions, chopped.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Peel and cube potatoes and boil in salted water until tender.<\/li>\n<li>Drain and mash slightly.<\/li>\n<li>In a small pan, heat milk and butter until butter is melted.<\/li>\n<li>Add the chopped spring onions.<\/li>\n<li>Fold mixture into the potatoes until well blended.<\/li>\n<li>This recipe serves six people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For Irish bangers, you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two teaspoons of ground white pepper.<\/li>\n<li>One teaspoon ground ginger.<\/li>\n<li>One teaspoon sage.<\/li>\n<li>One teaspoon nutmeg.<\/li>\n<li>100 grams salt.<\/li>\n<li>200 grams bread crumbs.<\/li>\n<li>Five kilograms pork roast.<\/li>\n<li>Two cups of ice water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grind meat until it is a medium\/fine consistency.<\/li>\n<li>Add spices and mix.<\/li>\n<li>Stuff into small casing links or make into compact patties.<\/li>\n<li>Fry till golden brown or leave overnight in fridge before freezing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For Irish stew, you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two to three potatoes per person, peeled and ready to cook.<\/li>\n<li>500 grams stewing beef, diced.<\/li>\n<li>500 grams carrots, sliced.<\/li>\n<li>One small onion, finely chopped.<\/li>\n<li>Small cup full of barley.<\/li>\n<li>Three beef stock cubes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add the stewing beef and barley to big pot of water and bring to boil and simmer.<\/li>\n<li>When beef is cooked add carrots and onion.<\/li>\n<li>Make beef stock in jug and add to pot too.<\/li>\n<li>Add as much salt as necessary, or leave this out until serving and people can add what they feel individually necessary.<\/li>\n<li>About an hour before serving time add potatoes to the pot to cook.<\/li>\n<li>Serve when potatoes are cooked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-below-post-content\">\n<div class='tenancy_slot tenancy_slot_1 jannah_ad' style='display: none;' data-query-id='d4f3aa67c885441686da878fde70118f'><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St Patrick\u2019s Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":42,"featured_media":83724,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"hasGravity":false,"cxt_article_byline":"","cxt_disable_google_ads":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3686],"tags":[1190,2055,6495,6894,3002],"class_list":["post-83723","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle-news","tag-caxton","tag-caxton-local-newspapers","tag-caxton-news","tag-celebrations","tag-st-patricks-day"],"amp_enabled":true,"category_labels":{"Category":"Lifestyle","SubCategory":"Entertainment"},"tag_labels":["Caxton","caxton local newspapers","caxton news","CELEBRATIONS","St Patrick\u2019s Day"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83723","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/42"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=83723"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83723\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/83724"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=83723"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=83723"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=83723"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
