{"id":81812,"date":"2015-02-21T03:53:20","date_gmt":"2015-02-21T01:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/81812\/celebrate-and-embrace-your-mother-language\/"},"modified":"2015-02-21T04:31:13","modified_gmt":"2015-02-21T02:31:13","slug":"celebrate-and-embrace-your-mother-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2015\/02\/21\/celebrate-and-embrace-your-mother-language\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate and embrace your mother language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999.<\/p>\n<p>On May 16, 2007 the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution called upon Member States \u2018to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world\u2019.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>By the same resolution, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages, to promote unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism.<\/p>\n<p>International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<div class='tie-fluid-width-video-wrapper tie-ignore-fitvid' style='margin-bottom: 30px;'>\n\t\t\t<iframe style='width: 100%; min-height: 300px; aspect-ratio: 16\/9;' src='https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/3COOZBCVSvk' loading='lazy'><\/iframe>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>The date represents the day in 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage.<\/p>\n<p>All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"stream-item stream-item-below-post-content\">\n<div class='tenancy_slot tenancy_slot_1 jannah_ad' style='display: none;' data-query-id='1b43113e405a00ad288031d84debb77f'><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The year 2015 marks the 15th anniversary for International Mother Language Day with the theme, Inclusive Education through and with Language &#8211;
