{"id":78726,"date":"2015-01-19T07:45:53","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T05:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/78726\/gde-taking-stand-bullying\/"},"modified":"2015-01-19T07:45:53","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T05:45:53","slug":"gde-taking-stand-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2015\/01\/19\/gde-taking-stand-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"GDE taking a stand against bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MEC Panyaza Lesufi has identified learner discipline as one of the priorities of the department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlans are afoot to establish a permanent Learner Tribunal to assist the MEC in matters relating to school based violence, gangsterism, drug abuse, cyber bullying and other related serious misdemeanors,\u201d says Phumla Sekhonyane, spokesperson for the GDE.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>She adds that the MEC wants cases of this nature to be expedited as well as ensuring that the department is proactive in identifying preventative strategies to eliminate these social ills from the school environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCases of bullying are acted on immediately, parents are informed of an\u00a0incident, perpetrators go through a disciplinary process and appropriate sanction is recommended.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPsychosocial support is provided to both victims and perpetrators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sekhonyane says that both the perpetrator and victim are afforded psychological and educational assessment, the results of which are confidential.<\/p>\n<p>Support is always accorded to the learners by the department\u2019s psychological services. An anti-bullying programme is always introduced at the affected school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach school must have a code of conduct to deal with bullying and other discipline issues. Learners are taught about bullying in Life\u00a0Orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bullying is a social ill that needs to be addressed by all stakeholders in and out of the education system.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the department conducted a Colloquium on Bullying to improve their interventions in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this colloquium experts agreed that it is important that learners are encouraged to report bullying and that parents and school authorities are encouraged to take complaints seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecognising that the scope of the Code of Conduct is limited, the department has developed a Draft Exemplar Anti-Bullying Policy, which is in the consultation phase, to assist schools to develop their own policies and better manage bullying,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sekhonyane they have developed posters and pamphlets explaining bullying which are being distributed to schools and used in the parental training workshops across the province.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to more effectively support the victims of bullying and other forms of school violence, the department\u00a0 has the following interventions:<\/p>\n<p>* The Gauteng Department of Social Development has allocated 25 social workers in to assist schools in dealing with behavioural challenges.<\/p>\n<p>* The department has signed a memorandum of understanding with Child Line to provide guidance and counseling to learners in Gauteng on a 24 hour basis.<\/p>\n<p>* They have partnered with Faith Based Organisations who have created a community-based network of pastoral care to learners in schools.<\/p>\n<div class=\"stream-item stream-item-below-post-content\">\n<div class='tenancy_slot tenancy_slot_1 jannah_ad' style='display: none;' data-query-id='0072eb621cb9df9f5b701e09feb41fcd'><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) strongly condemns any form of violence in schools and cases reported are prioritised and swiftly dealt with.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":57,"featured_media":78727,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"hasGravity":false,"cxt_article_byline":"","cxt_disable_google_ads":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,8516],"tags":[1755,6312],"class_list":["post-78726","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-headlines","category-local-school-news","tag-education","tag-school-bullying"],"amp_enabled":true,"category_labels":{"Category":"News","SubCategory":"Schools"},"tag_labels":["education","school bullying"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/78726","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/57"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=78726"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/78726\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/78727"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=78726"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=78726"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=78726"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
