{"id":77884,"date":"2015-01-05T22:31:46","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T20:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/77884\/gauteng-tops-matric-pass-rate-84-7-per-cent\/"},"modified":"2015-01-06T13:11:40","modified_gmt":"2015-01-06T11:11:40","slug":"gauteng-tops-matric-pass-rate-84-7-per-cent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2015\/01\/05\/gauteng-tops-matric-pass-rate-84-7-per-cent\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng tops Matric pass rate with 84.7 per cent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With excitement hard to contain, MEC of Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi could not stop smiling as colleagues and guests congratulated him on the great result achieved by Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p>Lesufi, along with other MECs and Deputy Ministers were delighted by the news of the Matric results, for the Class of 2014, when Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the Matrics of 2014 had achieved a 75.8 per cent pass rate nationally.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Although the pass rate is 2.5 per cent lower than last year, Lesufi believes, \u201cThis is the first benchmark, after South Africans complained about the quality of matric, and we have strengthened that quality, which makes these learners the best in the history of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also Read: <a href=\"http:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/54111\/grade-11-learners-given-pass-without-passing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Grade 11 learners \u2018given a pass\u2019 without passing<\/a><\/strong><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>His comments come after the Department of Basic Education had hosted the first matric learners to have written the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement\u00a0(CAPS)-aligned final examinations for the National Senior Certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Motshekga explained, \u201cEssentially CAPS is the strengthening of the National Curriculum Statement and clearly specifies what should be taught, which topics should be covered per subject, grade, and per quarter of the school calendar year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also provides guidelines on how assessment must be carried out including adding more content to some subject such Mathematics and Business Studies.
