{"id":7541,"date":"2013-07-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-14T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/7541\/honouring-a-germiston-citizenorgermistons-own-historical-figure-2\/"},"modified":"2013-07-19T09:30:41","modified_gmt":"2013-07-19T07:30:41","slug":"honouring-a-germiston-citizenorgermistons-own-historical-figure-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2013\/07\/15\/honouring-a-germiston-citizenorgermistons-own-historical-figure-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Germiston&#8217;s own historical figure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Germiston&#8217;s historical figure, Dr Willem Cruywagen, passed away on July 10.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in 1921.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Cruywagen was a prominent figure inside and outside of the Germiston community.<\/p>\n<p>He died at the age of 92, from a stomach ulcer.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>He was elected as a member of the House of Assembly for Germiston in 1961.<\/p>\n<p>During his parliamentary career he served as a deputy minister and minister of the departments of Home Affairs, Bantu Administration and National Education.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, Dr Cruywagen became the Administrator of the Transvaal and served in this position until his retirement, in May, 1988.<\/p>\n<p>He was also an academic and an author.<\/p>\n<p>His eldest son, Albert Cruywagen, said his father was recognised as an honorary citizen of Germiston, Elsburg, Springs and Alberton.<\/p>\n<p>The Bertha Gxowa Hospital, in Germiston, was named the Willem Cruywagen Hospital, in his honour, in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Albert Cruywagen described his father as &#8220;a people&#8217;s person, who was a patriotic Afrikaner&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He cared a lot about his people and the Afrikaner culture,&#8221;
