{"id":60395,"date":"2014-05-23T08:50:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-23T06:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/60395\/winter-fire-safety-tips\/"},"modified":"2014-05-23T09:09:02","modified_gmt":"2014-05-23T07:09:02","slug":"winter-fire-safety-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2014\/05\/23\/winter-fire-safety-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter fire safety tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The winter season is upon us and cold weather conditions are being experienced across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The plea from Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services is that people should be extra cautious when dealing with household energy sources.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>They have issued some useful safety tips to communities, in an effort to save lives and properties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Safe usage of heaters:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leaving heaters unmonitored is still a far too common practice by most people, either at home or work.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>People still believe that when they arrive in their offices or homes they should find them warm already and, subsequent to that, lots of properties and lives are lost due to fires.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Safety tips:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Switch off all the heaters and air-conditioners in the absence of an adult.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Never leave heaters or air-conditioners on overnight unmonitored.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Heaters should at all times be utilised in the presence of adults or a responsible person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Placement of the heater should be centralised within the room, away from any combustibles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Switch off all heaters before going to sleep. Blankets can fall onto the heater and catch fire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Do not dry clothes using a heater. The practice is a potential fire hazard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Keep the room or house ventilated when using paraffin heaters, as they emit toxic fumes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Refill the paraffin heater prior to usage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Use the approved refilling equipment, such as a liquid funnel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Any electrical repairs should be done by a qualified electrician.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Gas cylinders should be refilled at registered gas dealers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Avoid any gas leakage. Check the O-ring on the valve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid using other pipes like hosepipes.
