{"id":59063,"date":"2014-04-30T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/59063\/what-is-the-electoral-code-of-conduct\/"},"modified":"2014-04-30T14:42:15","modified_gmt":"2014-04-30T12:42:15","slug":"what-is-the-electoral-code-of-conduct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2014\/04\/30\/what-is-the-electoral-code-of-conduct\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Electoral Code of Conduct?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Code is a set of rules.<\/p>\n<p>The parties and candidates must:<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>speak out against political violence and threats against other parties, the IEC, members of the public and the media;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>let the authorities know about planned marches or rallies;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>communicate with other political parties about planned political events;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>recognise the authority of the IEC;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>work with the IEC structures and allow them to perform their duties;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>work with the police in their investigation of election crime and violence; and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>accept the results of the election or challenge the result in court.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How does the Code of Conduct work?<\/p>\n<p>The Electoral Code of Conduct must be agreed to by:<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>every registered party before the party takes part in an election; and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>every candidate before he\/she is placed on the list of candidates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parties and candidates must stick to the code and must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>let the public know about the Code;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>promote the purpose of the Code; and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>support efforts to educate voters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parties and candidates must also inform the public that all people (including women, persons with disabilities, and different language and cultural groups) have the right:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to be free to express their political beliefs and to be part of any political party; and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>to join in any political campaigns, marches or public meetings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What happens when you break the Code of Conduct?<\/p>\n<p>Any person who breaks the Code is guilty of a crime and can be fined or sent to prison for up to 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Political parties that break the Code can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be fined;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>be stopped from working in an area;
