Local author Carlyle Labuschagne started 2014 on a high note when her novel, Evanescent, won the Young Adult and Teen Readers (YATR) literary award, for the best Sci-Fi book in 2013.

Evanescent is the second book in the Broken Trilogy.

The Florida Hills resident and Germiston businesswoman’s first young adult (YA) dystopian novel, The Broken Destiny, was among the top three books in its YA debut category on www.goodreads.com.

Passionate about promoting literacy, Carlyle launched the help Build a Library in Africa project, to coincide with the launch of her first book and, in February, is launching another project aimed at getting youngsters to read and write.

Through a series of creative writing tests, Carlyle will select 10 of the best students, aged between 12 and 14 years, to write a short novel.

They will receive mentoring from her and other experts.

She is piloting the project at Avalon Private School, which she says might be a private institution, “but it is a young one with many needs and is passionate about education”.

First prize for the most promising author includes an ebook publishing package, formatting of the manuscript into various ebook formats, editing services, cover design and publicity support.

Carlyle also hopes to launch her very own indie book festival, in Johannesburg, early in 2015.

“My goal as an author is to touch people’s lives and to help others to love their differences and one another,” she said.
