lives on our roads this festive season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the festive season approaches, the traffic volumes on our roads begin to rise.<\/p>\n<p>These traffic volume increases are due to the end of the school year and industry closure periods, as well as the Christmas and New Year long weekends.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The EMPD will be stepping-up road safety operations during the 2013 festive season, in order to reduce fatalities on our roads.<\/p>\n<p>The EMPD will be taking a zero tolerance approach to drunken driving, reckless driving, un-roadworthy vehicles and revelers bent on causing mayhem.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>They will do this by way of visible and proactive enforcement throughout the festive period.<\/p>\n<p>Road safety is the responsibility of all road-users.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists are implored to ensure that their vehicles are fit to be on the road and that they possess valid documentation.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclists are encouraged to wear safety head-gear and visible clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Pedestrians are advised to refrain from jay-walking and walking along the freeways, and are asked to wear visible clothing at night.<\/p>\n<p>The EMPD is committed to making the city a safer place for all its citizens, and those visiting, by intensifying visible patrols in both crime and accident hotspots.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the community are urged to report criminal activities taking place or activities they suspect are about to take place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would like to wish the Ekurhuleni community a peaceful and safe festive season and implore drivers to be considerate at all times and to act in a responsible manner on our roads&#8221;, said Gauteng Chief of Police Hlula Msimang.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let us obey the rules of the road to the letter, so as to arrive comfortably and safely at our destinations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let us ensure that safety belts are used and that children are also properly restrained during trips.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Motorists are urged to plan thoroughly for the journeys they will be undertaking, to identify safe way points in order to avert the dangerous element of fatigue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"stream-item
