The Tebbutt Academy recently had a tough grading, called the Big Black Belt.

The grading cuscue (camp) ran over three days at the academy, in Lambton, and members with brown belts were graded to black belts, while those with black belts progressed to first Dan.

“It was blood, sweat and tears and some even cried, but, at the end, they made it, because they didn’t give up when the going got tough,” said owner of the academy, Master Alex Tebbutt.

The participants had to impress the strict panel, consisting of eight judges from different clubs.

Through perseverance and demonstration of skill at the cuscue, the Tebbutt Academy had six members successfully grading to black belts, two progressing to second Dan and another two reaching first Dan.

“The cuscue was a success and I am proud of the club members, they gave their all,” said Tebbutt.

In other news, 13 members of the club took part in the Shotokounthigh International Karate Tournament that was held at the B G Alexander Estate, in Johannesburg, on November 2.

“It was an excellent tournament; we did very well and managed to scoop 26 trophies overall,” Tebbutt added.

Their recent achievements have motivated the members to work even harder, as they have one more tournament lined up for the year.

It is scheduled for November 30, in Pretoria.

This is yet another tough event, as a South African team will be chosen to represent the country in Italy, early next year.

To end the year for the Tebbutt Academy, a prize-giving ceremony will be held on December 7, at the Ekurhuleni West College.
