{"id":250484,"date":"2020-04-22T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/250484\/elsburg-is-suffering-under-lockdown\/"},"modified":"2020-04-22T09:47:18","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T07:47:18","slug":"elsburg-is-suffering-under-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2020\/04\/22\/elsburg-is-suffering-under-lockdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Elsburg is suffering under lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been over a month since the community of Elsburg had a meeting with Faith Mazibuko, MEC of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety.<\/p>\n<p>According to Elsburg community leader Prince Rulashe the meeting yielded good results as the MEC intervened and provided solutions to a number of challenges the Elsburg community was facing.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>But the interventions were disturbed by the lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lockdown has affected us badly as a community as the MEC had deployed the Saturation Unit in Elsburg to combat crime and drugs.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut since the lockdown began the special unit has had to be redeployed to work all over Gauteng,\u201d said Rulashe.<\/p>\n<p>He said things did change after the meeting, but drugs are still a problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrime has decreased rapidly, but we still have an issue with drugs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation was much better before the lockdown as there were regular random searches and visible policing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the lockdown, like for many disadvantaged areas, has really impacted the community of Elsburg.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ALSO READ:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/237438\/enough-is-enough-say-elsburg-residents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enough is enough say Elsburg residents<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/223677\/reclaiming-the-streets-of-elsburg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reclaiming the streets of Elsburg<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community is really feeling the impact of lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people are left distressed as some don\u2019t have an income and local businesses in the area are being hit hard, especially informal traders, who can\u2019t operate during lockdown because they don\u2019t offer essential services,\u201d said Rulashe.<\/p>\n<p>He said the community is really trying to help each other during this difficult time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a company that has been assisting with food parcels to give to those in dire need,\u201d said Rulashe.<\/p>\n<p>He said if the lockdown is extended further the community has a plan in place to assist those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have plan in place as we have approached many individual companies within Elsburg to assist in relief in terms of food parcels to assist families in distress and will also engage with the Ekurhuleni Central Food Bank which was set up by the mayor,\u201d said Rulashe.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the community to be safe during the lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge all residents of Elsburg to adhere to the regulations put in place to stay at home during the lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, those who see the lockdown as an opportunity to become involved in illegal activities such as selling liquor and drugs must be warned that we are working closely with law enforcement agencies and we will not tolerate lawbreakers it in our community,\u201d said Ralashe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>* Notice: Coronavirus reporting at Caxton Local Media aims to combat fake news<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dear reader,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As your local news provider, we have the duty of keeping you factually informed on Covid-19 developments.
