{"id":246518,"date":"2020-04-12T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-12T04:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/246518\/there-are-no-flowers-only-a-need-to-stay-healthy\/"},"modified":"2020-04-11T14:54:44","modified_gmt":"2020-04-11T12:54:44","slug":"there-are-no-flowers-only-a-need-to-stay-healthy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2020\/04\/12\/there-are-no-flowers-only-a-need-to-stay-healthy\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Nurse speaks &#8211; &#8216;There are no flowers, only a need to stay healthy&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a nurse she falls under the category of essential workers and as such has been working during lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>Carin Eloff, a maternity ward nurse working in Alberton, shared her experiences working under lockdown conditions with the GCN\u2019s sister newspaper Alberton Record.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBefore the outbreak of Covid-19 going to work was something I looked forward to with a smile,\u201d said Carin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday that feels different.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>She described how she leaves her family bored at home to care for others and potentially put herself and her family at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I even leave my car my mask goes on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to describe the difficulty of trusting others, when every day, before you are allowed to enter the hospital you need to complete a checklist for safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe silence catches you unaware when you enter the maternity ward which is usually filled with excited noises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ALSO READ:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/246664\/ekurhuleni-continues-to-service-its-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ekurhuleni continues to service its people<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/246438\/top-tips-to-stay-sane-during-lockdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-19: Top tips to stay sane during lockdown<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p>\u201cWe try our best to help the new masked and scared moms breastfeed to help protect the vulnerable new baby from the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe poor fathers only shine in their absence,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can only see their wives and new babies again in the parking lot after they are discharged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no flowers, no big balloons and no visitors. Only a need to stay healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Carin their days are filled with learning new rules and changes to initial planning.<\/p>\n<p>They practice every day and think twice about every touch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hands are red from the sanitising and every 20 minutes everything is sterilised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven coming home is a process on its own,\u201d said Carin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband brings a bucket of warm water for the work clothes that are taken off outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShoes, masks and the rest can stay in the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I immediately take a shower before I\u2019m covered in kisses and hugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to the return to normality, but in the meantime we will make Aunt Florence proud and keep our lamps burning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur only request for the public is to stay home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLets give everyone the gift of health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family is just as precious as yours.
