{"id":246011,"date":"2020-04-12T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-12T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/246011\/operation-hunger-launches-feedafamily-campaign\/"},"modified":"2020-04-13T08:08:15","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T06:08:15","slug":"operation-hunger-launches-feedafamily-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2020\/04\/12\/operation-hunger-launches-feedafamily-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Operation Hunger launches #feedafamily campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Established in 1980, Operation Hunger has a history of positive action in the fight against malnutrition in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation has reached over 2.4 million beneficiaries and is ramping up its fund-raising efforts to help the vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur monthly feeding scheme, which provides for roughly 5 000 families, is under immense pressure due to various challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,\u201d said Clement Summerton, national project development manager for Operation Hunger.<\/p>\n<p>The Operation Hunger feeding scheme has 43 distribution points in deeply rural areas and sprawling informal settlements with little or no basic services.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Germiston and Katlehong fall under the organisation\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Hunger has the infrastructure in place to help thousands of additional families which is why they have launched the #feedafamily campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ALSO READ:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/245899\/food-drive-started-to-help-the-needy-in-the-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-19: Food drive started to help the needy in the community<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/244908\/germiston-red-cross-cares-for-the-vulnerable-during-lockdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-19: Germiston Red Cross cares for the vulnerable during lockdown<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Operation Hunger #feedafamily campaign enables anyone to donate from R200 on the Operation Hunger website (www.operationhunger.org.za) towards a food and sanitising pack for a vulnerable family.<\/p>\n<p>Once a donation is received, dry bulk foods, tinned foods and sanitary items are purchased and packed at a local supermarket.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of volunteers the packs are distributed to beneficiaries identified by local relief committees.<\/p>\n<p>Each beneficiary will sign on receipt of the food parcel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have added sanitising products to our traditional food parcel, and placed a big emphasis on flattening the curve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a difficult balancing act of feeding the country and fighting Covid-19, but our volunteers and staff have been nothing short of amazing thus far,\u201d said Summerton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are calling on the public to help us feed 10 000 additional families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in getting involved can visit the Operation Hunger website at www.operationhunger.org.za.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>*Notice: Coronavirus reporting at Caxton Local Media aims to combat fake news<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dear reader,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As your local news provider, we have the duty of keeping you factually informed on Covid-19 developments.
