{"id":244120,"date":"2020-04-14T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T08:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/244120\/elders-say-they-are-not-scared-of-lockdown\/"},"modified":"2020-04-13T12:06:47","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T10:06:47","slug":"elders-say-they-are-not-scared-of-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/opinion-edition\/2020\/04\/14\/elders-say-they-are-not-scared-of-lockdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Elders say they are not scared of lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The GCN&#8217;s sister newspaper the Alberton Record spoke to some elderly residents ahead of the Covid-19 lockdown to hear how they will cope during this time.<\/p>\n<h4><a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/246438\/top-tips-to-stay-sane-during-lockdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ALSO READ: Covid-19: Top tips to stay sane during lockdown<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Clara Pretorius (83)<\/strong><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBefore the lockdown, I did my necessary shopping,\u201d said Clara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought the food I needed and toilet paper and other toiletries.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Clara, who lives alone, said this will be a very quiet three weeks for her.<\/p>\n<p>Her plan is to do a bit of reading and if she gets restless to take her dogs for a walk around the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll try to stay busy,\u201d said Clara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not scared of this lockdown period. I\u2019m only slightly scared of what could happen if the period of isolation is extended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Clara she will have to go out again during this period to buy necessities but that she is not scared to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from that, she plans to use WhatsApp and other social media to stay in contact with her family and loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just have to remain positive and keep praying,\u201d said Clara.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mercia Russouw (88)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mercia, a resident of Queenshaven, said she is not at all worried about this time of lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are treating us very well here,\u201d said Mercia. \u201cThey are keeping us safe and giving us everything we need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Mercia, the effects of the lockdown and the possibility that it might be longer than expected is not something she thinks about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as the Lord cares for us we will be safe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mercia remembers something on a very smaller scale that happened during her childhood where they had to stay inside because of a severe outbreak of flu where she lived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was nothing compared to this,\u201d said Mercia.<\/p>\n<p>Mercia said she believed we, as a society, will be safe as long as nobody did things that they are not supposed to.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/240237\/your-blood-is-still-needed-by-sanbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Your blood is still needed by SANBS amid Covid-19 pandemic<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Pieter Kok (87)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is what it is, there\u2019s nothing we could do about it,\u201d said Pieter about the state of lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not scared of this lockdown. My faith is placed in the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pieter, who lives on a plot of land with his wife, said they are ready for the lockdown to take place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have bought all the necessary supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he has always been busy with work around the house and he will continue doing this to keep himself busy throughout the lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are nice and isolated on our land,\u201d said Pieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe in the words of Psalm 91 that the Lord will keep us safe during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>* Notice: Coronavirus reporting at Caxton Local Media aims to combat fake news<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Dear reader,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">As your local news provider, we have the duty of keeping you factually informed on Covid-19 developments.
