{"id":243219,"date":"2020-03-28T07:00:14","date_gmt":"2020-03-28T05:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/?p=243219"},"modified":"2020-03-28T09:12:35","modified_gmt":"2020-03-28T07:12:35","slug":"covid-19-careful-not-bank-payment-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2020\/03\/28\/covid-19-careful-not-bank-payment-holidays\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Be careful not to bank on payment holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government and financial service providers are looking at ways to mitigate the inevitable impact the Covid-19 lockdown will have on the nation\u2019s pockets, but consumers shouldn\u2019t bank on payment holidays.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to Benay Sager, chief operating officer at DebtBusters, the country\u2019s leading and largest debt counsellor.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>He said it is a good thing that the banks are looking at measures to assist consumers who may struggle to pay what they owe because the lockdown has affected their income.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/241341\/watch-dr-manning-bertha-gxowa-ceo-speaks-hospitals-precautionary-measures-place-response-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch: Dr Manning, Bertha Gxowa CEO speaks on the hospital\u2019s precautionary measures in place in response to Covid-19<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe rule of thumb, though, is that if you can continue to meet your repayments every month you should,\u201d he said.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf you can\u2019t because the lockdown is affecting short-term cash flow, a payment holiday may be one option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the real problem is that you\u2019re over-indebted then you should consider debt counselling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until recently competition law has prevented banks agreeing on a common plan, so presently there are a number of different offerings for individual customers or small enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>This may change in the near future as new regulations are gazetted to allow banks to share information about the best way to restructure loans to offer a so-called \u2018payment holiday\u2019.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/240237\/your-blood-is-still-needed-by-sanbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Your blood is still needed by SANBS amid Covid-19 pandemic<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Sager said whether the banks agree on a common set of principles or consumers are considering one of the existing offers it\u2019s essential to be aware of the terms and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly true for consumers who may hold loans or accounts with a number of different banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA payment holiday is very good news for someone who is facing a short-term cash crunch as a result of the lockdown, but it\u2019s possible that the interest will keep running, even though payments are paused,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means that the total payment at the end of the loan term may be more than the original total.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s an option that shouldn\u2019t be considered if you\u2019re facing a cash crunch as long as you\u2019re aware you may be paying back a bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/239426\/rest-a-while-take-steps-to-protect-the-elderly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rest-a-While take steps to protect the elderly<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>It is important that consumers don\u2019t assume all lenders will offer a payment holiday and need to keep paying unless they\u2019re specifically informed that they qualify for leniency.
