{"id":242545,"date":"2020-03-25T18:58:12","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T16:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/242545\/covid-19-ekurhuleni-releases-plans-metro-area-national-lockdown\/"},"modified":"2020-03-25T18:58:12","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T16:58:12","slug":"covid-19-ekurhuleni-releases-plans-metro-area-national-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2020\/03\/25\/covid-19-ekurhuleni-releases-plans-metro-area-national-lockdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Ekurhuleni releases plans for metro area during national lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) outlined a list of measures to continue providing essential services during the lockdown declared by President Cyril Ramaphosa on March 23.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/bedfordviewedenvalenews.co.za\/429525\/covid-19-schools-face-no-june-holiday\/\">Covid-19: Schools could face no June holiday<\/a><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The measures are to ensure that all basic and essential services are provided to the residents, including services to informal settlements, such as healthcare services, waste removal, provision of electricity as well as water and sanitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health <\/strong><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>All clinics will remain operational and will be working in collaboration with Gauteng Provincial Health Department.<\/li>\n<li>Healthcare sites identified for quarantine of Covid-19 cases are Nokuthela Ngwenya Community Health Centre, Old Natalspruit Hospital and Old Thokoza Fire Station.<\/li>\n<li>Six teams from City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) were activated to do contact tracing. Each team consists of environmental health practitioners, doctors, professional nurses, surveillance officers and health promoters.<\/li>\n<li>All early childhood development centres have been closed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Also read:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/bedfordviewedenvalenews.co.za\/429458\/gauteng-health-gives-update-covid-19-measures\/\">Gauteng Health gives update on Covid-19 measures<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy and call centres<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only non-essential staff in the energy department will be released during this period and the\u00a0customer care centres and finance offices will be operational with a skeleton staff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environment and Waste Management<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Waste collection services will continue according to the approved schedule.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer stations and mini disposal sites will be closed to afford the service providers the opportunity to clear waste from the facilities to avoid rodents. Residents may not use the transfer stations.<\/li>\n<li>Officials responsible for environmental compliance and enforcement will be on standby to respond to environmental incidents.<\/li>\n<li>Officials responsible for snake catching will be on standby to respond to snake call0-outs.<\/li>\n<li>Clean city programme will be affected by the lockdown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/bedfordviewedenvalenews.co.za\/429530\/department-infrastructure-targets-2-000-beds-health-facilities\/\">Covid-19: Gauteng Department of Infrastructure targets 2 000 beds for health facilities<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Parks <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four nurseries will have a total of four employees on duty, for plant maintenance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cemeteries<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The CoE will endeavour to spread the bookings. Bookings approved on weekdays will avoid weekend congestions.<\/li>\n<li>Graves will be allocated in a &#8220;scattered manner&#8221; to avoid congestions of different processions.<\/li>\n<li>Each funeral procession is expected to run for not more than an hour.<\/li>\n<li>The burial bookings will only be accommodated between 10am and 3.30pm for both weekdays and weekends.<\/li>\n<li>Twenty active cemeteries will have a total of 30 employees on duty for burials only, no operations and unveilings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recreational services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SRAC) facilities, such as swimming pools, halls and recreation facilities and libraries, will be closed and refunds for booked venues will be processed by finance office. All SRAC events will be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/bedfordviewedenvalenews.co.za\/396485\/councillors-call-for-calm-in-time-of-covid-19-pandemic\/\">Councillors call for calm in time of Covid-19 pandemic<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Disaster and Emergency Management Services <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fire and Ambulance Services personnel, call centre agents, and all support and essential staff are working during this period.<\/li>\n<li>Metro Police as well as security services will be operational during this period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ICT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only non-essential staff will be released during this period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water and sanitation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Water sanitation will continue with quality testing of water as well as discharge quality controls in the city.<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance contractors for water will be working as well as depots supplying materials for the department.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Licensing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All licensing offices will be closed during the lockdown period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real Estate <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CoE has waived rental payments for tenants using council properties whose entities do not fall under essential services.\u00a0 The city deems it unfair to collect rent because these businesses will not yield any income for the duration of the lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>The CoE will continue to coordinate its lockdown interventions through the established Joint Operations Centre (JOC).<\/p>\n<p><em>Dear reader,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As your local news provider, we have the duty of keeping you factually informed on Covid-19 developments.
