engine and ambulances damaged in community attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Primrose Fire Station once again bore the brunt of the community\u2019s anger.<\/p>\n<p>Residents from the Makause informal settlement recently descended on the station allegedly demanding immediate assistance.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<h4>ALSO mob justice behind Pretoria Road shutdown<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>However, when they were told no personnel were available to assist them, they attacked the fire station destroying equipment and leaving two ambulances out of commission.<\/p>\n<p>William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), confirmed the attack and explained that the station\u2019s firefighters and ambulance crews were on the scenes of both a pedestrian and vehicle accident when the community arrived.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cA security guard was left on duty at the station while personnel attended to the scenes,\u201d Ntladi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents allegedly banged on the windows of the station\u2019s roller doors, demanding that the security guard let them in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aggressiveness of the group forced the security guard to open the doors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The community reportedly wanted assistance with regard to an alleged murder victim in a nearby shack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn hearing that all the station crews were assigned to different calls and no one was available to assist, the community members began damaging other vehicles within the station,\u201d explained Ntladi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe group broke one fire engine\u2019s mirrors, while two ambulances, parked in the station, were also damaged and their tyres stabbed with a sharp object, leaving them out of commission.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a vehicles in Primrose<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Though the guard tried his utmost to stop the residents he had to flee the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was threatened and had no option but to run for his life,\u201d said Ntladi.<\/p>\n<p>This incident is one of a number of attacks on the station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incident brings uncertainty and fear to the entire workforce of the station,\u201d Ntladi explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy must paramedics and firefighters fear to save lives?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, duties, safety measures and expectations of firefighting and paramedics are different to other services, they cannot be armed to perform their life-saving duties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DEMS condemns the actions of the community to the fullest extent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese damaged resources are the same ones used to serve the community,\u201d Ntladi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot allow such activities to go unpunished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe plead with the good law-abiding community members to
