{"id":230727,"date":"2020-02-19T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/230727\/exploring-a-new-world-in-aviation\/"},"modified":"2020-02-18T15:51:31","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T13:51:31","slug":"exploring-a-new-world-in-aviation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2020\/02\/19\/exploring-a-new-world-in-aviation\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring a new world in aviation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most people know of medical doctors or doctors in academia, however not many people know of doctors in aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Andre Coetzee has a doctorate in aviation.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Andre, who is the CEO of Henley Air, a helicopter flying school at Rand Airport, as well as an engineer and pilot by trade, obtained a PhD in aviation five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>He specialised in aviation management, which focused on a categorisation methodology for new helicopter pilot candidates for Henley Air.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Andre completed his PhD at the Da Vinci Institute in Modderfontein after transferring from the University of the North West.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dr Andre Coetzee chats about Henley Air\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O5M5YDVEQg8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He explained that this is a method that scientifically gauges an individual\u2019s ability and aptitude to become a pilot.<\/p>\n<p>Andre saw a gap in the aviation industry and a need for this type of aptitude testing in the aviation world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe business made me realise that my job was no longer only about managing helicopters and pilots, but actually managing the egos of helicopter pilots, students and aircraft owners,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting off with my own ego, and how to manage that successfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy business partners and I came to the realisation that we don\u2019t have the luxury of choice, and any guarantee of a prior assessment of the candidate who we get in terms of their egos, which can be a detrimental flaw when it comes to flying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what motivated me to specialise in aviation management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andre wanted to develop and incorporate an instrument that will be able to gauge this more accurately and scientifically, in order to prevent accidents, behavioural issues and mentalities that do not fit in an aviation company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ALSO READ:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/228646\/the-sky-is-her-playground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The sky is her playground<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/221753\/keeping-the-skies-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keeping the skies safe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He explained that this form of testing is not invasive, and is voluntary; its job is to detect behaviours that are not in line with the behaviours that are needed in the aviation industry to produce successful, respectful and cautious pilots.<\/p>\n<p>The instrument is able to test 18 different behaviours that are common in most people.<\/p>\n<p>Andre\u2019s interest in flying started when he was a child as his father studied towards a private pilot\u2019s license (PPL).<\/p>\n<p>Andre got his PPL for helicopters at the age of 15, whilst he was still in school.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to PhD studies, he explained that it was extremely difficult and took up a lot of his personal time to extend his studies in addition to running a business, supporting a family and flying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was tough, it put a lot of strain on my family and I, and it took a lot out of me,\u201d Andre said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"7020027050 - Ashtyn GCN Andre Coetzee CEO Henley Air\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Uz3G7WaYcsg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, Andre\u2019s hard work and perseverance paid off. He graduated with his doctorate on the same day and time as his father, Prof Johan Coetzee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad and I graduated on the same day, he was studying towards his third PhD at the time, so we timed it so that we would be capped together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat for me was just the cherry on top, and made it all worth it,\u201d Andre said.<\/p>\n<p>In the future Andre hopes to be able to spend more time with his family, labelling this as a goal of his.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that there is always time for learning and to better oneself.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery
