Nal\u2019ibali is an NGO that runs a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign designed to assist children reach their full potential through reading and storytelling. Nal\u2019ibali has brought an exceptional story to children for the past seven years to encourage them to celebrate World Read Aloud Day (WRAD).<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>In their first year (2013), the campaign reached 13 000 children, while last year\u2019s story was read to 1 559 730 children in a single day.<\/p>\n<p>On February 5, Nal\u2019ibali\u2019s goal is to read aloud to over two million children. Nal\u2019ibali celebrates WRAD annually, to draw attention to the importance of reading aloud to children in their mother tongue.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The NGO commissions a brand-new story \u2013 best suited for reading aloud to primary school children \u2013 and translates it into all 11 official languages.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation urges parents, teachers and caregivers to join it in reading aloud to the children in their lives on the same day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_228518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-228518\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-228518\" src=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2020\/01\/04GCNGENERALREAD_35556-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2020\/01\/04GCNGENERALREAD_35556-520x390.jpg 520w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2020\/01\/04GCNGENERALREAD_35556-270x203.jpg 270w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2020\/01\/04GCNGENERALREAD_35556-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2020\/01\/04GCNGENERALREAD_35556.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-228518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A group of children participate in live reads at the Sandton Library event during World Read Aloud Day 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nal\u2019ibali is based on the logic that a well-established culture of reading can be a real game-changer for education in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Literacy skills are a solid forecaster of future academic success in all subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Children who regularly read and hear engaging stories in languages they understand are well-resourced and motivated to learn to read and write.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s story, A Day to Remember, is written by distinguished local author and early literacy expert Lerato Trok.<\/p>\n<p>Trok originally wrote the story in Setswana, her mother tongue, and it was then translated into all the official languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it interesting that when I\u2019m commissioned to write a story, without question the default language of writing is English.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, for this story it only came naturally once I decided to write it in Setswana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made me realise how we underestimate the power of our own language,\u201d said Trok.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of benefits to children having a deep understanding of their first language.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of teaching and education in early childhood is oral, which helps them understand and recognise words and develop a broad vocabulary which will assist in their learning and success in later years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ALSO READ:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/213139\/books-that-thrill-and-chill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Books that thrill and chill<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/211684\/building-a-reading-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building a reading nation<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further to this, reading aloud has the following benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It allows children to experience reading as a satisfying and meaningful activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It motivates them to learn to read for themselves and then to keep reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It shows them how we read and how books work.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It allows them to enjoy stories that are beyond their current reading ability.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It develops their imagination, vocabulary and language abilities.<\/p>\n<p>To commemorate WRAD, a special live reading event featuring this year\u2019s ambassador, Manaka Ranaka, will take place at the Es\u2019kia Mphahlele Community Library in Pretoria on February 5.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the big drive to read to two million children on WRAD, there are other events planned, which include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A community walk through the streets of various communities in six different provinces to promote the day. Story cards will be given out and members of the community will be invited to pledge to read.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A public pledge drive in local malls and shopping centres to encourage participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Read aloud sessions by Nal\u2019ibali literacy mentors at schools, libraries or other partner sites will take place on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Show your support and help make
