It’s time once again for the Victoria Lake Canoe Club’s (VLC) annual Night Race.

“With the canoeing season heating up it is once again time for that great Gauteng canoeing tester, the VLC Night Race,” said Wayne Saunders on behalf of VLC.

The race will be held on February 11 at Germiston Lake, and will serve as one of the last opportunities for canoeists to refine their racing and portaging (running with boat) techniques for the world’s toughest endurance canoeing event, the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon, which will be held between February 27 and 29 in Pietermaritzburg.

Race registration will open at 5pm, with canoeists splashing into the water at 6.30pm.

The race will see paddlers doing five laps around the lake, a total of 15km, with a short 50m portage splitting the laps.

“The event is a great fitness tester and opportunity to streamline your portaging and general racing techniques ahead of the Dusi and upcoming South African marathons,” said Saunders.

“Thanks again to our valued sponsors, Ola Factory Stores and Southern Cold Storage, we are able to once again offer one of our legendary Night Race T-shirts as an incentive to partake in this great evening event to the first 70 entrants.”

Though there is no limit to the number of canoeists who can compete in the race, which is sanctioned by the Gauteng Canoe Union (GCU), all paddlers should be registered with a club and with the GCU.

Clubs are asked to ensure that paddlers who join as new learners are able to swim and recover themselves in a number of difficult situations before they allow them to register with GCU and compete.

Paddlers are also reminded that life jackets are compulsory.

For more information on the event or to enter visit the GCU’s website at www.gcu.co.za or send an email to raceentries@gcu.co.za.
