{"id":227324,"date":"2020-01-11T06:30:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-11T04:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/?p=227324"},"modified":"2020-01-10T13:56:39","modified_gmt":"2020-01-10T11:56:39","slug":"elsburg-police-offer-community-home-safety-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2020\/01\/11\/elsburg-police-offer-community-home-safety-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Elsburg police offer community home safety tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Elsburg SAPS urges residents to consider building high fences, with lockable gates, security gates with sturdy locks, as well as burglar proofing covering all windows as their first point of adding security in their homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with these elements, residents can install razor wire, additional locking devices on doors, peepholes in the doors, safety chains to doors, an intercom system between the home and gate, front door or garage and the strengthening of doors to ensure minimal to no successful house robberies,\u201d said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>The following devices can also be used to beef up security in your home:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 An alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can act as an effective deterrent.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u2022 In the rural environment a siren\/alarm on the roof that can be heard over a long distance and that can be activated by means of a switch\/panic button in the house, is recommended.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A few switches or panic buttons in different rooms of the house should preferably be installed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 An alarm must also have the capability to warn the occupants of any intrusion into the house.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/210348\/handy-energy-saving-tips-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Handy energy saving tips<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Examples of alarm systems:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Mechanical and or electrical (purchased types).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Improvised systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Threaded tins.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Threaded pieces of iron.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Gravel on window panes, pathways or around the home.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Obstacles that can make a noise when moved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biological systems:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dogs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Geese.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ostriches.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Security lights:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Security lights on the outside of the house improve the physical protection of a house, farm or smallholding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The lights must be directed away from the house and must allow the occupants to use the windows without being observed from outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Be aware of possible shadows and blind spots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Safety precautions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ensure that all doors are locked at all times, and that windows are closed when you are not at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Large dogs serve as a deterrent. At least one dog should be trained to sleep inside the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If you leave your residence, inform your family\/neighbours of your intended destination, time you expect to return and the route you will be driving, especially if you reside in a rural area.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ensure that tools, such as axes, spades, picks and ladders, that can be used in an attack are locked away when you do not use them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Vary your daily routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Get into the habit of not immediately falling asleep after switching off the lights.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remain awake for a while.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 You should not be visible in the bedroom from the outside when you are asleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Always keep a torch nearby at night and when you use it ensure you do not give away your position.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If you are unsure about the security status of your home after returning from work or a visit, do not enter your home, contact your neighbour to assist you in securing your home.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Identify relatively safe places of refuge.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The fewer windows and doors these rooms have, the better.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Involve employees as they are part of the family or team.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Employees must be involved in maintaining security on an equal footing.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Report suspicious behaviour and information to your nearest police station.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Clear the areas around the gates of bushes and other hiding places.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Take photographs of all employees. It could be to your advantage to identify them, if required.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remunerate your employees when useful information is provided that contribute to the prevention of crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Do not employ casual workers without a reference.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Keep copies of all your employees\u2019 identity documents.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" control:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Do not allow strangers on your premises or in your house without having properly identified the person, especially at night.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Implement efficient key control measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Identify keys by means of codes instead of indicating in writing on labels to which gate or door access can be gained.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Never hide any keys in traditional places, such as in pot plants or under doormats.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Keys in the keyhole on the inside of the front or back door should be turned to avoid easy removal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Never allow strangers to handle keys or look at key numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Change locks when keys are lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Insert barring devices in door locks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remove keys from doors when leaving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere should be two systems to call for alternative backup, a telephone, one that is preferably installed where it is easily accessible from anywhere in the house, and a cellphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInform your children not to give an indication that adult supervision is not available when they answer the phone,\u201d Phooko said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
