After the project was completed in 2018, the resounding answer was yes.<\/p>\n
South African automotive employers can achieve up to a 200 per cent return on their investment from contracting or employing apprentices.<\/p>
\u201cWe focussed the research on three occupations namely auto mechanic, body repair and spray paint.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe research criteria was made-up of three parts.<\/p>\n
\u201cFirstly, to apply modern data collection and analysis techniques at automotive employers for the three trades.<\/p>\n
\u201cNext to ascertain the estimated business value in Rands that an apprentice can be expected to deliver, and lastly to develop a return on investment (ROI) calculator for use by employers,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Olivier said small and medium sized employers are reluctant to contract and train apprentices because they perceive that apprentices don\u2019t pay their way and it\u2019s costly to train them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis research disproves this.<\/p>\n
\u201cHistorically there has been a lack of measurable apprentice performance and productivity data.<\/p>\n
\u201cEssentially no access to current and reliable information.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe this problem has been resolved by the ROI calculator which is available, free of charge to employers,\u201d said Olivier.<\/p>\n
It is a web-based, easy and user-friendly tool.<\/p>\n
