{"id":225901,"date":"2019-12-13T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/225901\/from-a-garage-in-soweto-to-a-factory-at-rand-refinery\/"},"modified":"2019-12-12T16:07:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T14:07:53","slug":"from-a-garage-in-soweto-to-a-factory-at-rand-refinery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2019\/12\/13\/from-a-garage-in-soweto-to-a-factory-at-rand-refinery\/","title":{"rendered":"From a garage in Soweto to a factory at Rand Refinery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NQ Jewellery launched their factory at Rand Refinery, Industries West, last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The business was founded by jewellery designer Nqobile Nkosi in Soweto in 2007.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy mom could not afford for me to continue with my education, but luckily I was introduced to jewellery design and that was the foundation which led to where NQ Jewellery is today,\u201d said Nqobile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years the sacrifices I had to make to get here were unbearable.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Nqobile saved R20 000 to start up NQ Jewellery in Soweto, and he raised the money by washing cars in the streets, and selling sweets and cakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>ALSO READ:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/225963\/shirley-wins-r10-000-pixzar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shirley WINS R10 000 with PixzAR!<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/225199\/women-acknowledged-for-their-contributions-to-their-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women acknowledged for their contributions to their communities<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2009 NQ Jewellery won the Jet Community Award.<\/p>\n<p>The Jet Community Award is awarded to organisations that have made a difference in the lives of the underprivileged.<\/p>\n<p>When NQ Jewellery received the Jet Community Award, it was the start they needed to help them move out of the garage in Soweto, and today into a factory at Rand Refinery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very exciting because it is not every day that you see a local jewellery designer from Soweto occupying a factory at Rand Refinery, which is also known for its rich history,\u201d said Nqobile.<\/p>\n<p>NQ Jewellery has also received the following awards:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Gauteng Business Leader Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 SAB Kickstart Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Euronews Hope Fund Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the money NQ Jewellery received from the awards is invested into the growth of the business,\u201d said Nqobile.<\/p>\n<p>The factory works with raw materials that are mined in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll our products are handcrafted and manufactured by highly skilled workers just behind these doors,\u201d said Nqobile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are eight staff members on a busy day, and four staff members on a slow day, and they all equally contribute to NQ Jewellery being a success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud to say that we are not just distributing locally, but we are distributing internationally as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hard work pays off for NQ Jewellery\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5iaiMJdEP3Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
