{"id":225624,"date":"2019-12-11T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T04:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/225624\/residents-tired-of-rubbish-piling-up\/"},"modified":"2019-12-10T14:26:08","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T12:26:08","slug":"residents-tired-of-rubbish-piling-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2019\/12\/11\/residents-tired-of-rubbish-piling-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents tired of rubbish piling up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cOnce again there is a huge backlog in waste removal in Germiston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These were the words of Ward 36 councillor Wendy Morgan.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>She further stated that Germiston was not the only city facing this problem.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/224616\/resident-concerned-over-power-issues-refuse-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Resident concerned over power issues, refuse collection<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>However, this is little solace to many residents who have not had their rubbish collected for several weeks.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy bins are full and starting to stink,\u201d said a Dinwiddie resident, who did not wish to be named.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you call the call centre you get no answers or feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leon de Beer, another disgruntled resident, noted that since the introduction of the wheelie bin system there have been continuous delays in refuse removal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no longer timeous refuse removal on the scheduled days,\u201d de Beer said.<\/p>\n<p>Willie Smith, a Tedstoneville resident, shared his frustration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last time they collected the refuse was at the end of October,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I phoned the metro\u2019s call centre I was told that there are only two trucks doing the routes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy rubbish is not being collected, yet the metro continues to charge me for the service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carmel Singh added, \u201cSo besides always having power outages, which the metro cannot explain, they are now not collecting the rubbish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo although we pay for all these services we do not receive them. Why exactly are we paying when the metro cannot do their job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another complaint from the community is how the waste management personnel handle the wheelie bins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe staff break the wheelie bins and then we, as residents, are expected to replace them,\u201d said a resident who wishes to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" sent a query to the metro to find out what had caused the backlog and when it would be resolved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cause of non-collection is vehicle breakdowns,\u201d said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the last two weeks we have been operating with an average of five trucks per day instead of the 10 trucks required per day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gadebe further
