{"id":224858,"date":"2019-11-30T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-30T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/224858\/elsburg-residents-want-an-end-to-power-outages\/"},"modified":"2019-11-30T20:13:34","modified_gmt":"2019-11-30T18:13:34","slug":"elsburg-residents-want-an-end-to-power-outages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2019\/11\/30\/elsburg-residents-want-an-end-to-power-outages\/","title":{"rendered":"Elsburg residents want an end to power outages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents in Elsburg are at their wits\u2019 end as they have had to learn to deal with extended power outages.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks the suburb has had to deal with two of these prolonged power outages.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The first of these outages took place at the beginning of November and lasted more than 60 hours, according to residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElsburg has been without electricity for several days and no one is worried about doing their jobs. They\u2019d rather sit and sleep,\u201d said Sonja Pestana during the outage.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAll our food has gone off and the metro won\u2019t replace it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband has a medical condition and needs machines that need electricity to function, but we are without electricity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pestana further claimed that residents were receiving no help from the metro\u2019s call taking centre or Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer, a sentiment echoed by a number of other community members.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/219319\/power-problems-persist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018Germiston power supply anything but stable\u2019<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>De Beer visited the site where work was carried out and commented that work was delayed for several reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the reasons for the delay in restoration was that officials could not gain access to a company in Elsburg to test cables,\u201d de Beer said.<\/p>\n<p>She continued to provide feedback to the community as it became available to her.<\/p>\n<p>The power was finally restored to the area and the metro claimed the outage had been caused by multiple cable faults on several medium voltage distribution cables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe anticipated restoration time frame was prolonged due to multiple cable faults on our medium voltage distribution cables,\u201d said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weather also played a role in the delayed restoration time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked why the call taking centre had not been able to assist residents with information regarding the outage Gadebe responded, \u201cFeedback was communicated through the ward councillor on a regular basis regarding the outage.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/204331\/power-woes-continue-for-germiston-residents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Power woes continue for Germiston residents<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On Wednesday the suburb was plunged into darkness once again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet again the whole of Elsburg is without electricity. When will this come to an end?\u201d said Pestana.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest outage it was alleged that metro technicians were unable to gain access to the substation in Naauw Street, where the fault was alleged to be, as it was situated in a business property which was locked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe business owner locks the gate and the metro technicians couldn\u2019t gain access to the substation,\u201d said Ester De Lange, a community member.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently no one had the business owner\u2019s contact number, so the people of Elsburg had to go without power until he arrived and unlocked the gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Beer confirmed that work on power restoration could only begin on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPower was restored to the affected areas by 9pm on Thursday evening,\u201d said de Beer.<\/p>\n<p>The GCN sent a query to the metro to find out the cause behind the latest outage and to address the allegation that the metro technicians were unable to access to
