{"id":222212,"date":"2019-10-31T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T04:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/222212\/water-supply-returns-to-normal-at-germiston-police-station\/"},"modified":"2019-10-31T12:51:21","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T10:51:21","slug":"water-supply-returns-to-normal-at-germiston-police-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2019\/10\/31\/water-supply-returns-to-normal-at-germiston-police-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Water supply returns to normal at Germiston Police Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us cannot imagine working in an office that has no water, but for the Germiston police this was a reality for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The water supply issues were first brought to the GCN\u2019s attention by Mark Assante, who heard about the station\u2019s troubles through a local service delivery WhatsApp group.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Const Maxwell Mabunda, the communications officer for the Germiston SAPS, confirmed the water supply issues.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/219319\/power-problems-persist\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Germiston power supply anything but stable\u2019<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cWe have had little to no water in the station\u2019s office block since the Rand Water supply line burst in August,\u201d Mabunda said.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>During the outage, Assante, with the help of companies Quicksure, Motor Accident Group and local community members, donated water to the station to help the officers continue with their daily duties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DA is horrified that police officers in Germiston were forced to bring water from home because the water supply to their station was not working,\u201d said Michele Clarke, Germiston constituency head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Germiston Police Station was without water for weeks, leaving officers with an inhumane and unhygienic problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the metro was on site to investigate, no interim water tankers were provided to the police station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilarly, the Department of Public Works, which the South African Police Service (SAPS) rents the offices from, had not intervened, despite the water problem being reported weekly.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/219319\/power-problems-persist\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Germiston power supply anything but stable\u2019<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Responding to queries from the GCN, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, divisional head of the metro\u2019s communications and media relations department, gave the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe metro was fully aware of the problem at the Germiston Police Station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe query has been attended to and found that it is an internal problem that must be attended to by the Department of Public Works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked how law officials could be expected to carry out their duties with no water, taking into account the Germiston Police Station is also home to a forensic department and state mortuary, Cebekhulu said: \u201cThe mortuary has a separate connection and water is stored in a tank for emergency conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest of the buildings on the property do have water. Pressure was measured at 3.0 bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is only the office block that is affected by the water supply interruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe department has even opened fire hydrants on the property and the pressure was good, but still they did not get water in the office block.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mabunda told the GCN that the Department of Public Works recently restored water supply to the
