Patrolling EMPD Public Order Policing (POPS) Unit members noticed three people running in different directions in a veld on Monday, just before 2pm in the Germiston area.<\/p>\n

Upon investigation, the officers discovered a nine-metre electricity copper cable which had been disconnected.<\/p>

\u201cThe three men who were digging a trench alongside the N3 highway, south direction, near the Geldenhuys interchange, without proper warning signs and reflectors, saw the patrolling officers closing in and decided to show them a clean pair of heels,\u201d said Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesperson for the EMPD.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe POPS Unit members stopped and upon investigation, it was revealed that the trio were up to no good.<\/p>

\u201cThe SAPS and the metro\u2019s Energy Department were summoned to the crime scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nine-metre electrical cable had to be booked in at the nearest police station in order for SAPS forensic fingerprint experts to work on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to assessors, the estimated cost to replace the disconnected cable is R55 000 with materials and labour.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransport was quoted at R18 000, so it could cost the metro R73 000 in total,\u201d said Mokheseng.<\/p>\n

The matter is being investigated by the SAPS.<\/p>\n
